Frequently Asked Questions

Opt-Out

Full-time students who do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. (Please note: International students may not waive out of the plan.) The waiver process is annual: if you chose to opt-out in the fall, your waiver is good for the entire year. Keep in mind that if you do not opt-out and you have qualifying coverage, you will be automatically enrolled and charged.

You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

     2023-2024 Annual Term: 06/20/2023 to 09/08/2023

     2024 Spring/Summer Term: 12/04/2023 to 01/31/2024

Waiver Criteria for Opting Out of SHIP

 If you have other health insurance, such as coverage under your parent’s or employer’s insurance plan, and you do not wish to enroll in Menlo College's Student Health Insurance Plan, you may opt out, but only if the benefits under your existing coverage include all of the following:

  • Coverage must be continuous (no break or termination) for the entire academic year;
  • Coverage must be ACA-compliant;
  • Maximum benefit must be unlimited;
  • Deductible must be $1,000 In-Network and $1,200 Out-of-Network or less per Policy Year;
  • There must be a provider network in the Menlo College area for primary routine care, specialty, hospital, and diagnostic care (no out-of-state plans);
  • Student-athletes must have athletic injury coverage; and
  • Claims must be paid by a U.S.-based company, and underwriting company must be owned, operated, and headquartered in the U.S. and must be in full compliance with all applicable federal laws.

You will receive an email from AHP to activate your Care26 account. Once you have done this, you will be able to opt-out or enroll in coverage.
